2026.11.2
The 14 sets of Sugito-e (Painted Cedar Doors) of the Honmaru-goten Palace are normally stored in the storage, with one set being exhibited every six months at the Honmaru-goten palace’s Goshoin (Reception Rooms), the Second Room of Unkaku-no-ma (Cloud and Crane Rooms).
Currently, the set titled “A Pine tree and Cranes (Shokaku-zu)” painted by the artist of Tsurusawa School is on display.
The Tsurusawa school was a group of painters based in Kyoto, founded by Tsurusawa Tanzan (1655/58–1729), who was a pupil of the renowned Kano Tan’yu (1602–74).
The clear composition utilizing negative space, combined with the airy colors and brushwork, is a beauty unique to the Tsurusawa school. Featuring cranes and pine trees—symbols of longevity and prosperity, this piece is a true must-see.
This exhibition will end on Sunday, March 14, 2027.From Wednesday, March 17, 2027, “Bamboo and A Tiger (Chikko-zu)” painted by the artist of the Tsurusawa-school will be on display.
