Exhibition of “Plum Tree and Nasori (Ume ni Nasori-zu)” at the Honmaru-goten Palace
2026.4.13
The 14 sets of Sugito-e (Painted Cedar Doors) of the Honmaru-goten Palace are normally stored in the storage, with one set being exhibited every six months at the Honmaru-goten palace’s Goshoin (Reception Rooms), the Second Room of Unkaku-no-ma (Cloud and Crane Rooms). Currently, the set titled “Plume tree and Nasori (Ume ni Nasori-zu)” painted by HARA Zaisho is on display.
Two performers are shown performing Nasori, a piece from the Bugaku repertory (traditional Japanese court dance and music), with a white plum beside them.
The mouths peeking out from beneath the Bugaku masks, tightly clenched hands, and the texture of the plum tree bark convey a strong sense of realism. And the delicate, meticulous depiction of the costumes is a standout.
This exhibition will end on Sunday, October 18, 2026.From Wednesday, October 21, 2026, “Pine tree and Crowns (Shokaku-zu)” painted by the artist of the Tsurusawa-school will be on display.
